A Creative Marathi Exercise with LLMs — Teaching Classical Poetry Through Its Mirror Image
मोरोपंत (मयूर पंडित, १७२९–१७९४) हे मराठी पंडितकवींतील शेवटचे मोठे नाव. त्यांची केकावली — १२१ पृथ्वी छंदातील चौपाया — मराठी काव्यपरंपरेतील एक अमूल्य रत्न आहे. "सुसंगती सदा घडो" हे केकावलीचे भरतवाक्य — उपसंहारातील देवाकडे केलेली आर्त प्रार्थना.
This post proposes a creative exercise for Marathi classrooms: after deeply studying Moropant's Kekavali, students compose its विपरीत (corollary) — where the original invokes every good thing, the corollary warns against every corresponding evil. The twist: students can use any LLM tool for their first draft, but then must critically evaluate and perfect the output using their own knowledge of Marathi prosody, vocabulary, and meaning.
The idea draws from Panini's foundational grammatical principle of विधि-निषेध (injunction and prohibition) — every positive rule implies its negative counterpart.

The Exercise — For Marathi Classrooms
This is a creative exercise designed for Marathi teachers to give their students. The core idea: students have already learned about LLMs — they will use them regardless. So instead of pretending they won't, we design an exercise that requires LLM use as the starting point but makes the student's own knowledge the finishing line.
मूळ तत्त्व: Kids are going to use LLMs no matter what. Unless we make them think while they use it, how are they going to learn?
This idea was inspired by the University of Michigan Law School's new admissions essay prompt (July 2025), which requires applicants to use generative AI in composing their response — and then evaluates how thoughtfully they used it. Their dean put it simply: "If we have applicants who have that skill, let's give them an opportunity to demonstrate it." The same principle applies here — except with मोरोपंत instead of legal briefs, and छंदशास्त्र instead of case law.

शिका — Learn the Original Deeply (In Class, 1-2 Lectures)
Teacher teaches Moropant's Bharat-vakya in depth: the meter (मात्रावृत्त, ११+१३ मात्रा प्रत्येक चरणात), the vocabulary (सुसंगती, सदंघ्रि, दुरभिमान, दुरित, भवारणव), the theological imagery (यशोदा-कृष्ण, दयामेघ-मयूर), and the rhetorical structure (विध्यर्थ — the optative mood: "may this happen").
समजा — Understand the Corollary Concept
Explain the पाणिनीय विधि-निषेध concept: every "सु-" has a "कु-/दु-", every "घडो" has a "न घडो". Show 2-3 example lines so students grasp the pattern. Use the comparison table above as a reference.
तयार करा — Use an LLM to Generate a First Draft
Students prompt any LLM (Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, etc.) to write a विपरीत केकावली. This is the starting point, not the final answer. The LLM will produce something — but it will almost certainly have problems: wrong meter, weak vocabulary, repetitive construction, inauthentic Marathi.
तपासा — Critically Evaluate the LLM Output
This is where real learning happens. Students must check:
- छंद (Meter) — Does each line match the मात्रा count? Is the rhythm right?
- शब्दसंपत्ती (Vocabulary) — Are the words authentic Marathi? Or Hindi-influenced? Or just generic?
- यमक (Rhyme) — Do the line-endings follow the original's rhyme pattern?
- अर्थ (Meaning) — Does each विपरीत line truly mirror the मूळ line's meaning?
- रूपकें (Imagery) — Are the metaphors inverted properly? (यशोदा, मेघ-मयूर, भवारणव)
- वैविध्य (Variety) — Does the LLM just repeat "न घडो" in every line? Or does it use varied verb endings like the original?
सुधारा — Fix, Rewrite, Perfect
Students rewrite the draft with their corrections. They may go back to the LLM with specific fix requests, or they may rewrite lines entirely themselves. The final submission should be accompanied by a short note explaining what they changed and why.
सादर करा — Submit with a Reflection
Final submission includes: (a) the LLM's raw first draft, (b) the student's corrected version, and (c) a paragraph explaining what the LLM got wrong and how they fixed it. This reflection is the most important part.
Why This Works
This exercise tests multiple skills simultaneously. Students can't fake it — even with an LLM doing the heavy lifting, evaluating and fixing Marathi poetry requires genuine understanding of the language's prosody, vocabulary, and literary tradition.

शिक्षकांसाठी टीप: LLM output is the starting line, not the finish line. The student who submits the LLM's raw output unmodified will score poorly — because the LLM will make mistakes in meter, vocabulary, and imagery. The student who deeply understands Moropant's original can spot and fix those mistakes. That's the test.

About Moropant
मोरोपंत रामचंद्र पारडकर (१७२९–१७९४), "मयूर पंडित" म्हणून प्रसिद्ध, हे कार्हाडे ब्राह्मण मराठी कवी होते. मराठी साहित्यविद्वानांनी "पंडित कवी" म्हणून वर्गीकृत केलेल्या कवींमधील ते शेवटचे मोठे नाव (मुक्तेश्वर, वामन पंडित, रघुनाथ पंडित, श्रीधर हे अन्य प्रमुख पंडित कवी). मोरोपंतांनी १०८ रामायणे लिहिण्याचा संकल्प केला होता; प्रत्यक्षात ९४-९५ लिहिली. केकावली (१२१ पृथ्वी छंदातील चौपाया, अंतिम एक स्रग्धरा छंदात) ही त्यांची अंतिम प्रमुख कृती, c. १७९० मध्ये पूर्ण. दोनशे वर्षांनंतरही केकावलीचे आकर्षण अबाधित आहे.

Note: The विपरीत version above is itself an LLM-assisted draft — composed in conversation with Claude, iteratively corrected over multiple rounds. It is offered as an example, not a perfect model. Students are encouraged to improve upon it. That's the point.
The grammatical framework referenced here is Panini's — the great Sanskrit grammarian whose Ashtadhyayi (~4th century BCE) formalized the विधि-निषेध (rule and exception) principle that structures all of Sanskrit grammar and, by extension, Marathi's literary tradition.
